Winter is over

That's it, I've called it! The Tuesday Boys and our ladies played 18 holes this week, there is almost no rain for the next ten days on my forecast and temperatures are rising. We can all go back to doing what we love best, which is complaining about the weather, but while actually playing golf.

Please make a note of the upcoming social events listed below. We’ll also be showing Ireland v Scotland in the boardroom tomorrow on Super Saturday, which should provide a splendid finale to this year’s Six Nations. I know England have had a… character-building campaign, but I am not one to gloat. No, not me. Good luck in Paris!

Pre season

scratch team practice

This session led by George focused on driving and tee shots, with players experimenting with tee height, shot shaping, and developing a reliable “go-to” shot.

A go-to shot is a club or particular shot shape that a player can repeat with confidence. Having one in the locker can be invaluable in pressure situations: standing on the first tee with the usual nerves, playing a tight driving hole, or needing to find the fairway with one hole left to win a match. Knowing you have a dependable shot that will put the ball safely in play can make all the difference.

To put the theory into practice, they finished with a fun challenge in the Swing Room, playing the 9th hole at Augusta National. Players earned one point for finding the fairway, with an extra point awarded for drives over 250 yards that still finished in the fairway. The aim was to encourage players to feel confident using a longer club, as statistics show that the closer you are to the hole, the greater the likelihood of making birdie.

Players were encouraged to develop a reliable driver go-to shot, one they can trust under pressure while still gaining valuable distance down the fairway.

Congratulations to Simon Bulteel, who won the challenge by finding the fairway over 270 yards on two of his three attempts. A very impressive effort!

Free tennis!

Don't forget that Mary Whitty, who lives opposite the driving range, has kindly offered her tennis court to members. Althought the weather hasn't been particularly suited to outdoor racket sports, we're promised it's about to change for the better! The pro shop has a booking sheet for those interested.

Tuesday Boys play 18 Holes!!

This week 40 Tuesday Boys played the full 18 holes for the first time since long before Christmas. Winter fitness levels meant a good crop of fines for scoring less than 30 points, but certainly did not affect Alan Bigley and John Kilmartin who won with an excellent score of 41 points. Whilst some fairways remain pretty wet, the greens are in remarkably good shape, boding well for when temperatures rise and the grass starts growing.

Next week, Tuesday Boys goes cashless, almost. Time to top up your bar cards, as the £2 entry fee will now be taken from your card, though fines will rise to 50p and continue to be taken in cash, as a humiliating confession to the scorer and handing over a very small amount of cash remains part of the character of Tuesday Boys.

Peter Keith-Lucas.

Pro League Round 4

The Pro League finally got going again last Saturday! Click here to read Ken's report on Round 4. Good luck to all the teams tomorrow.

Course Update

Our course team has been making the most of the recent weather windows to continue important maintenance and improvement work around the course and clubhouse grounds.

Down on the 5th hole, work has continued on the ditch area where several birch trees have been removed. This will make access to the ditch much easier for future maintenance and ensure the area can be managed more effectively.

The greens have received their fortnightly liquid feed, an important part of our ongoing programme to maintain healthy, consistent putting surfaces as we move further into the growing season. At the same time, a setting agent has been applied to help the greens retain moisture more evenly and improve turf health.

Before the rain returned, the team also continued hand-cutting the tees, ensuring a crisp, high-quality finish. The tee plates have all been carefully edged, giving the teeing grounds their sharp and tidy appearance.

Around the clubhouse, attention has also turned to presentation. The front lawn furniture has been thoroughly jet-washed, leaving the area looking fresh and ready for members and visitors to enjoy as the weather improves.

Finally, groundwork has begun for a forthcoming improvement, with a grass bank removed to prepare for the installation of new practice nets. This will be a welcome addition to the club’s practice facilities once completed.

As always, many thanks to the course team for their continued hard work in challenging conditions.
