Officially the Clubhouse closes at 8 p.m. in the summer and 5 p.m. in the winter, but it is frequently alive with the sound of music, laughter and applause long after that. Internal competitions in the summer are often followed by a fork supper, and many Friday evenings in the winter-time are given over to social events of one sort or another.
Revues
The time-consuming nature of writing, rehearsing and performing Piltdown Revues means that they are not staged every year. All of the members who are involved in these productions give their time (and talent) for free and they are usually rewarded by an enthusiastic response from the audiences. The popularity of these Revues means that they are performed for three or four nights and every performance is sold out within days! Members who want to attend these Revue evenings have to be quick off the mark when the list goes up. Their popularity is due in no small measure to the talents of Graham Broadbridge, Dick Glynne-Jones and Charles Lewis who are always supported by a willing bunch of members who "strut their stuff" with a vengeance! For those members who cannot attend for whatever reason, videos and DVDs are available from the Club.
Bridge
Every third or fourth Friday during the winter months, a group of members get together and occupy a dozen or more tables to play Chicago. A hot supper is provided to fortify the players during the evening.
Theme Parties
Theme parties, like the French cabarets and Jazz evenings, are more in the night-club style, with tables scattered around a dance floor and food and drinks consumed more or less continuously while the entertainment proceeds. The normal dress code is waived for these evenings and members respond with some amazing costumes. This all helps to create the right atmosphere for the occasion.
Other Social Events
General Knowledge quizzes have been popular in the past and our own versions of television games such as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Call My Bluff have enjoyed excellent support from the members. We are lucky enough to have among our members several experts in interesting topics e.g Robin Walters on wine, Rear Admiral Ian Robertson on Nelson's Navy, and Dr Chris Petit on being a doctor in the Army. They have all given fascinating expositions of their subjects for the entertainment and enlightenment of the members.
Annual Men's Dinner
With the extended lounge area we are able to accommodate higher numbers at the Annual Men's Dinner when Jane and her team regularly provide a superb meal for over 80 members.
Annual Barbecue
The annual Cocktail Party has been replaced by a Barbecue. This has proved highly successful in recent years even when the weather has been unkind, with members sitting under their umbrellas, eating their food and enjoying themselves despite the rain. This event provides an opportunity for members to bring guests and meet potential new members.
